Music While Observing?

Since I started observing, I've liked to listen to music while I am out at the telescope. Then the battery in my MP3 player (an iRiver H10 5GB) went bad and wouldn't hold a charge for more than a few minutes. So I just started not listening to music at the 'scope. I finally realized that (duh) eBay would have replacement batteries for my MP3 player. To my delight, they were also just $5. Much cheaper than having to buy a new iPod or something!

So now I'm getting back into the habit of using an MP3 player out at the 'scope. I've got some of my favorite music on there, including some good music for astronomy. Of course, there's some Pink Floyd on there. I had to have Dark Side of the Moon, it just seems appropriate! Also, some of what I call "planetarium music" I ripped from Soma FM. The inner "nerd" in me enjoys the Halo soundtracks at the telescope, due to the orchestral and instrumental nature of most of the songs. Classical music also goes well with observing. Basically anything that's kind of mellow.

Those are, of course, just my thoughts on music while observing. I was wondering if anyone else listens to music while out at their telescopes, and if so what kinds?

Tim Conrardy is an online astro-friend that also composes his own music. He does lots of astro-theamed songs and they are really good to listen to at the EP

I also listen to lots of podcasts while observing: Astronomycast, Slacker Astronomy, Astronomy A-Go-Go, and The Jodcast being towards the top of the list.

I checked out that music and it sounds like good music for astronomy! I'll have to download those songs later tonight!

Hmmm ... well there are a number of songs by Blue Oyster Cult and also by Hawkwind that fall into the space rock genre.

Astronomy (BOC)
Black Corridor (HW)

On another note, you can "see" the songs here:

Haha, I checked out those links, and at first was confused about what they were. Then I realized what a "wordle" was after reading their FAQ and found it that it was the lyrics!

I am also familiar of the Metallica cover of "Astronomy", which turned out very nicely!

Sean - sorry I was having a little fun. The quotes around see was a hint. I do need to listen to the Metallica cover.

Did you know that Michael Moorecock collaberated on a number of lyrics with BOC? Kinda of explains the tone :)

Here's the perfect song to go along with your observing, Shoulders of Giants, written by Padi Boyd and performed by the Chromatics/AstroCappella, especially for the International Year of Astronomy 2009.

If you enjoy this song, there are other songs available for free download from the same Website.

Hi Sean; Andy in Conneaut, music I listen to.......Metallica, (black album)when I feel like it, other times I listen to Vangelis and Yanni. And sometimes even Transiberian orchestra.

Yeah! Definitely enjoy me some Metallica, but I don't know if I could listen to heavy metal at the telescope! Haha!

TSO is definitely a good choice!!
