Astronomy Calender, Nov. 2008

The following is a list of celestial events that will occur in November 2008.

  • November 3 - Jupiter is 1.9 degrees North of Luna.

  • November 4 - Go vote!

  • November 5 - Peak of the Southern Taurid meteor shower. The Southern Taurid meteor shower is pretty slow at 5-10 meteors per hour, so I wouldn't be too worried about missing this one.

  • November 12 - Peak of the Northern Taurid meteor shower. This shower is also pretty slow at 5-10 meteors per hour.

  • November 17 - The peak of the Leonid meteor shower occurs at 10:00 local time and is expected to produce rates of up to 40 meteors per hour. Bright moonlight will compete with the shower, however, and only the brightest meteors will be easily seen.

  • November 18 - Luna is 1.2 degrees South of M44

Also, I'm going to be keeping an eye on Comet 85P/Boethin. This comet is predicted to reach 8th magnitude this month, so it might make a good target for telescopes!

Clear skies!

Hasn't Boethin disappeared?

Yeah, we have in fact "lost track" of Comet Boethin, but I'm still going to keep an eye out for it since it is possible that it is a malfunction of the EPOXI spacecraft.

Of course, if Boethin did disappear, we wouldn't be able to find it, reaffirming NASA's data. If we do find it, we've just proven it is still there!

Here's to hoping its still there!
